Introduction to Prostate Cancer for Black Men

Overview by Professor Frank Chinegwundoh MBE
Consultant Urological Surgeon
St Bartholomew’s Hospital
Barts NHS Trust

The reason for having several pages dedicated to black men is that studies in the UK suggest a high risk of prostate cancer in men of African origin. Prostate cancer is highest among men of the West African diaspora, be it black men in the USA, the Caribbean, Brazil and the UK.

These men with African ancestry are at 2–3 times the risk of prostate cancer in comparison to their white Caucasian counterparts, with a concomitant higher mortality rate. That is one in four of this group can expect to suffer from prostate cancer in their lifetime.

This introduction is in the form of a video recording of an interview I had on the show ‘Patricia Talks’ along with Errol Mckellar, click the image below to watch the video.

For more information on black men and prostate cancer, I have written several pages on the site which can be accessed here by clicking the relevant buttons below.

Finally, the link below will take to a page which summarises the latest research on the genetics associated with black men.
